The Central Eurasia Leadership Academy is pleased to invite applications for its 2007 Leadership Workshop. The development of future leaders with character, initiative, and strategic vision is one of the keys to enhancing cooperation, security, and prosperity in the Central Eurasia region. To this end, CELA will invite 45 high-potential, mid-career professionals from Central Eurasia to a ten-day leadership workshop in Istanbul that will be intensive, challenging, and fun.

Applicants must be between the ages of 28 and 42. They must be citizens of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The professional sectors targeted in 2007 are government, business, NGOs/ civil society and media. Candidates working in the spheres of business and government are particularly encouraged to apply. Women also are strongly encouraged to apply.

All costs associated with the CELA 2007 Leadership Workshop for those invited to attend (including tuition, food and accommodation in Istanbul, and economy-class transport from the participant's home country) are borne by CELA.(Published 15 March 2007)

The students from Belarus, Moldova, and the South Caucasus region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) accepted to the master's program are awarded full scholarships funded by the governments of Sweden and Norway. The information about the number of available scholarships for the international students can be found at the KSE website (www.kse.org.ua/scholarships ) or in the EERC Office. The international students will be required to submit an application for financial support by July 10, 2007, 15:00. All scholarship recipients will be required to sign a scholarship agreement with KSE.

The EERC M.A. program provides its students with a rigorous two-year academic curriculum; courses are taught in English primarily by faculty visiting from universities in Europe and North America. The level of studies is fully comparable to that found in leading Western universities. The program provides a well-designed combination of applied and theoretical courses in all major areas of economics. The EERC program is by far Ukraine’s largest source of modern well-trained economists. It is one of just four such programs serving the region, along with the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education (CERGE) in Prague, the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, and the New Economic School (NES) in Moscow. Intergovernmental Mid Term Review (IMR) Conference 13-15 June 2007 in Vienna

Preparations are underway for the mid term review of how governments have made progress on reducing environmental health risks within the context of the commitments they signed up to in the Budapest Declaration and the Children’s Environmental land Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) in 2004.

The Intergovernmental Mid Term Review (IMR) Conference will take place 13-15 June 2007 in Vienna, hosted by the Austrian government and organised by the World Health Organisation. (for more details, see http://www.env-health.org/a/2454)

Prior to the Vienna IMR, there will be a NGO Side Event on 11-12 June where organisations from across Europe will share with each other and ministerial representatives how they tackled children’s environmental and health challenges such as:

  • reducing the rate of childhood diseases such as asthma, respiratory, neurodevelopmental and cancer through more protective environmental policies in the areas of air quality and hazardous chemicals management.
  • decreasing accidents, injuries and prevalence of childhood obesity
  • improving access to clean water and sanitation to reduce diarrhoea diseases.

LEAD Europe Fellows Training Programme 2007

LEAD is currently recruiting emerging leaders from the business and financial sectors for its 2007 European training programme in leadership and sustainable development to complement applicants from other sectors. Beginning in late March 2007, the training takes place in several countries. It is designed to inspire participants with the latest thinking, to sharpen their leadership skills and network with a group of high-level peers. They will also interact with outstanding leaders and hear their stories of challenge and opportunity working in the field of sustainability.

The programme involves 15 face-to-face training days spread over six months, supported by two on-line events. There will be three week long sessions in Europe, each with a different focus, and an optional international session as follows:

  • Climate change (UK, March)
  • The intergovernmental system (Switzerland, June)
  • Management of common resources (Hungary, September)
  • Climate and energy international session (Indonesia, November)

The Environment Council, member of PECE, is launching a new Learning and Development Programme for 2005 - 2006, commencing October 2005, that majors on how to have better conversations with your stakeholders to enable better decision-making. Partnership Brokers Accreditation Scheme (PBAS) - Krakow, Poland

The PBAS is run by The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). It involves a seven day intensive residential skills training course (in North Wales, UK from 20-26 November 2005) followed by three months mentored Professional Practice.

The PBAS is seeking to bring ethical and professional standards to partnerships for sustainable development based on 'competence sharing' and not transfer of risk and resources.The PBAS Scheme is aimed at individuals from NGO, business, government and international institutions in Europe.
